The Mexican beach wedding shirt, called the guayabera, is a men's shirt that is popular in Latin America. The history of the beach wedding shirt is often disputed, since there are various claims in many countries, about the origin of the shirt. These claims have been made by the Philippines, as well as several countries in Latin America. However, the Mexican beach wedding shirt has existed in Mexico since pre Columbian times and was created in the Yucatan peninsula part of Mexico.

 The Cubans also are claiming to have created the beach wedding shirt, and tell the legendary story about a poor seamstress, living in the country side, who sewed large pockets on her husband's shirt, so he could bring home guava and other fruits back from the fields for her.

Until just recently, the white Mexican wedding shirt had only been associated with men over 40. But, lately younger men have started to take an interest. When these younger men began to wear them, this started a clothing trend that is known as retro.

In Florida, it is acceptable to wear the Mexican beach wedding shirt to work, as a way to remain comfortable in the hot, humid weather. The beach wedding shirt is also worn as a symbol of Mexican pride amongst the Hispanics living in America and is known to be the choice of dress and uniform of the United Farm Workers.

The short sleeved beach wedding shirt is made of light cotton material that is sometimes decorated with embroidery, and is known as being masculine formal attire. It is considered to the appropriate traditional dress for men on their wedding day. The shirts can have either two or four of the patch pockets which will be adorned with buttons. Also, the shirt usually will have ten vertical rows of fine pleats that will run along both the front, and the back. The shirts will have a straight bottom type of hem and is not meant to be tucked into pants, like other dress shirts.
The colors of the beach wedding shirts in the past on were just white and pastels, but now they come in a variety of different colors. The most popular color for the beach wedding shirt in Mexico is black with heavy embroidery.
